2011 was The Dougie, 2012 was Gangnam Style, now in 2013, it’s the Harlem Shake. The popular dance has not only swept the States but now our own, Jasper High School. The Robotics Team and Mr. Elrod’s Interactive Media classes have all made a video covering this new dance.
But behind the massive craze that is the Harlem Shake, there is some pretty cool history behind the origin of this dance.
The Harlem Shake originated in Harlem, New York in 1981. The Harlem Shake was based on a tribal Ethiopian dance called the “Eskista”.
A man by the name of Al B, brought this dance to Harlem in 1981. Al B said that this dance comes from the ancient Egyptians and describes it as what the mummies used to do. He said that because the mummies were all wrapped up and they couldn’t move and all they did was shake.
The Harlem Shake first caught on at the Entertainer’s Basketball Classic or EBC and spread from there to other areas.
