Gripping the slightly dog-eared pages with tiny palms, tiny fingers smoothing across the glossed pages, the child reads eagerly with an insatiable appetite for new information. Children books act as early influences and are wonderful resources for introducing new concepts and ideas to children. Elements of children’s books such as bounding, vibrant colors and inspirational characters leave long-lasting impressions that influence children from a young age. Weighing this impression, the JHS GSA club has entertained the idea and put forth a blueprint for their own children’s book.
The rough idea for the story is loosely based around a child entering an airport and seeing all the variations of families. Heterosexual, homosexual, and biracial couples are seen alike traversing the airport. Mixed families are also an important role in the book and are included in the airport as well. The intended meaning of the story is targeted toward its main audience: children. The club hopes for children to be able to identify with the story’s themes and motifs. As the LGBTQ community toils to expand its message, children books centered around aspects of the LGBTQ community and family life will help facilitate children’s understanding of these areas and to expand their perspectives from a young age.
The illustrations in the book will also be hand-drawn by the club artists. In total, the book will be 100% fruition of the GSA club. Upon completion the club will have to search for a willing publisher and put forth their absolute final (and best) copy. Until then, the club will continue to sell Skittles during lunch in the school’s cafeteria. All of the profits contribute to the club and its projects. Sneak peek: Maybe (just maybe!) a new project may be revealed and on display for the student body before Christmas break!
