Rowing Into Indiana University

Rowing, an uncommon sport in Jasper, an opportunity in Bloomington. Senior Nellie Mowat signed to the IU Women’s Rowing team this past Monday, October 21st. Meeting at 1:00 p.m. in the JHS community room, Mowat’s family and close friends attended her signing ceremony. Taking a stand at the podium, Mowat delivered a self-penned speech addressing her rowing roots and involvement with the IU program, recounting that she had never imagined herself as being “an athlete, and a collegiate athlete at that”.

Mowat began rowing through her father’s inspiring stories of his collegiate days as a fellow rower. Although a novice at the sport, Mowat expressed great interest and importuned her sister Leena Mowat about available rowing classes at her current college, Indiana University. IU, unfortunately, does not offer rowing classes to its students, however, the rowing teams welcome beginners with open arms. Mowat emphasized on the program’s heightened interest in positive mental attitudes over atheticism. Mowat recalled that you can change your athletic abilites, but you can’t gain a fortified mental attitude. With this in mind, JHS wishes Nellie the best of luck in her collegiate years and we are proud to be a part of the journey. Courtesy of the pun-laden words of Tristan June, “Let’s row it, Mowat!”
